Every so often I get asked about a particular photograph and how it was achieved…and I’m always happy to share! So I thought I would start posting here too~ I will tell you what I did to pose the scene or if no posing was required, my camera settings and any other important info that helped me capture that image. Let’s call it a photo recipe!
Now of course, I have to provide a little disclaimer here – because there really isn’t a foolproof “recipe” for any particular image. Many times it depends on the lighting in the room, the candid moment itself or an unexpected angle I caught last minute – but for the most part, this series will cover the main points on a few of my favorite images.

Details! Details! Details!
When I first arrive to the bride’s getting ready room on her wedding day, I give her a big hug while she finishes up her make up and grab her “details box”. This box is what I have asked my #albride gather for me to photograph as part of her day. It includes invitation set, perfume, ring sets, garter, jewelry, shoes, etc. I will take the box out of the room to find the perfect area to begin stylizing the items and be out of way. I only need a small space to work with but always look for the best light! Sometimes Most of the time, you have to improvise with what you have available to you and make it work…
In this case, I started by placing Megan’s invitation set on the floor next to the window for best light, but the dark floor did not seem to fit Megan’s overall “feel” and color scheme to her wedding…Her day was full of light and airy details and this background was black/dull. I needed to find a lighter base to stylize her details on. While looking, I saw a set of lawn furniture outside the hotel’s lobby with light material cushions and decided to borrow them for a bit 😉
I liked the parallel side of the book and the other details on the light setup. I used the decorative cart next to the elevator of this hotel behind me in this picture to hang Megan’s shoes on…
